Bergart is an annual contemporary culture festival taking place in Bergen. For the 2004 festival I curated the exhibition for Hordaland Art Centre. The theme for that year's festival was freedom of speech. Due to the upcoming American presidential election I was asked to make an exhibition focusing on the US, and made a two part exhibition for the two gallery rooms. In the basement room the
American made documentary film Peace, propaganda & the Promised Land made by
Bathsheba Ratzkoff and Sut Jhally for the media Education Foundation was
screened. "The Media Education
Foundation produces and distributes video documentaries to encourage
critical thinking and debate about the relationship between media ownership,
commercial media content, and the democratic demand for free flows of
information, diverse representations of ideas and people, and informed
citizen participation." (From

Hordaland Kunstsenter inviterer skolens studenter på artist talk i forbindelse med åpningen av vår BergArt-utstilling.

HORDALAND KUNSTSENTER.
Temaet for årets festival er ytringsfrihet, og vi har konsentrert oss om USA.
Fredag 8. oktober, samme dag som utstillingen åpner, vil den andre av totalt tre
tv-debatter mellom Bush jr. og Kerry gå på luften. Den amerikanske demokratiske
prosessen har vært diskutert mye siden sist valg i 2000, og i år følger hele
verden med på hva som skjer. I lys av dette viser vi Paul Shambroom sitt
prosjekt "Meetings". I krypten viser vi "Peace, Propaganda & the Promised Land"
av Bathsheba Ratzkoff og Sut Jhally.
Paul Shambroom undersøker Pericles fundamentale
læresetning om demokrati i dagens USA i serien Meetings; individet er forpliktet
til å debattere og bestemme den politiske virkeligheten til sitt folk.
Representasjonens historie i Vesten er fylt med avbildinger av makt og
maktutøvelse, gjerne i stor skala med maktens menn poserende i teatralske
omgivelser. Bildene i denne utstillingen er glimt av det mindre spektakulære,
men kanskje mer autentiske uttrykket for demokrati slik det blir utøvet i dag.
Han er født i Teaneck, New Jersey i 1956 og bor og arbeider i Minneapolis, Minnesota. Han er ikke tidligere vist i Norden.
